Sustainable museum?

The Exploratorium is moving. It closed its Palace of Fine Arts location on 2 January and reopens on Pier 15 next week.

Reading about the move, some numbers stood out. The museum had 570,000 visitors in 2012. Its annual budget is over $58 million. That's over $100 per visitor. With a gate price of $15-25, that's quite a subsidy.

I haven't found the full budget; I'm not sure where all of the money is going nor where it comes from. Some goes to staff: 290 full-time, 554 total. Perhaps it includes the amortized cost of renovating the pier and moving, which wasn't cheap (~$250M). Surely some comes from selling or renting exhibits to other museum, though I suspect that's a small amount. But it's a scary subsidy.

Trip report, part 1: welcoming chance intrusions

I just got back from everyone's idea of fun: two days in New Jersey.

As I waited to board my flight to Jersey, I hear "Sam???". One of the best known contra dance callers in the world. On my flight. I scramble to get us reseated together.

It turns out she's started to call English dances in the last year, and she's calling an experienced dance this Friday (today). And she'd been putting off working on her program until she was done with this weekend of contra calling.

We spent the 3.5 hour flight listening to her iPod (yay, traveling with an audio splitter) and working up over a dozen English dances, some of which I've been meaning to work up, too. So I have new repertoire. And I had a lot of fun.

Bad labor relations, taken to an extreme

2005. Useless Air and America's Worst merge.

May 2007. Their pilots, still under separate contracts, can't figure out how to merge seniority lists. The ALPA, representing both groups of pilots, has an arbitrator figure it out. The old USAir pilots don't like the result.

April 2008. Old USAir pilots vote out the ALPA, replacing it with a union who's constitution says it will fight for the seniority system they want.

Old America West pilots get pissed and start acting out.

Now: the new union sues its own members under RICO.
